Dion Stutts, a Memphis University School multi-sport star and Arkansas football commit, died on Tuesday night, MUS football coach and athletic director Bobby Alston confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. He was 18.
Alston said it’s his understanding that Stutts died in an ATV accident on his farm in the Batesville, Mississippi area. He had just finished his junior year at MUS.
No other details were available as of Tuesday night.
The Batesville, Mississippi police department referred a Commercial Appeal reporter to the Panola County Sheriff Department when contacted about Stutts’ accident. The Panola County Sheriff Department declined to comment and told a reporter to call back during normal business hours Wednesday morning.
“Our hearts are broken for the family. Dion was such a great young man. He had a smile that warmed your heart when you had a chance to be around him,” Alston said.
Stutts was one of the top Memphis area defensive linemen returning for the upcoming football season after recording 30 tackles and 13 tackles for loss as a junior last fall. A three-star recruit, Stutts committed in March to play college football at Arkansas. Stutts was also an accomplished wrestler at MUS.
“We’re going to miss that smile, miss that wonderful personality and we’re just praying for his family right now,” Alston said.
